Stress and your pet’s health
Chances are, you already know that stress affects your health. Have you ever thought about the ways it affects your cat’s or dog’s health?
For 50 years, Dr. Paul McCutcheon has been helping the animals who come to his holistic veterinary clinic recover from the stress in their lives and the problems it causes them. Helping his clients understand what stresses out their pets and what they can do about it are two special benefits of his approach. Now, you can get access to his wisdom through the book The New Holistic Way for Dogs and Cats: The Stress-Health Connection. You’ll learn more about The New Holistic Way on this website. You’ll also find information about natural health care concepts and practices, relatively new to the Western world, that have greatly benefited Dr. McCutcheon’s patients.

Victoria Day Fireworks Pet Safety Tips
Pets with noise phobias—fear of loud sounds such as fireworks, thunder and gunshot—can be very uncomfortable and stressed out from loud fireworks during Victoria Day. Please remember that our pets cannot control how they react to loud noises. It is our responsibility to keep them safe and to reduce, if not prevent, their stress. You can learn to recognize the signs of noise phobias, practice fire safety and keep your pet in a safe “escape” place at home during Victoria Day.
Pets with noise phobias may exhibit the following signs:
- Shaking, trembling
- Excessive drooling
- Barking, howling
- Trying to hide or get into / out of the house, fence, or other enclosure
- Refusing to eat food
- Some animals may loose bladder or bowel control or experience temporary diarrhea from prolonged stress
Please note: The signs mentioned above are general signs, and could be indicative of many different diseases or conditions. Please consult with your veterinarian if these signs persist after fireworks or thunder has subsided, or if you suspect that your pet may have been poisoned or is otherwise ill.

A holistic approach to cats and dogs’ health problems
We often think about stress in terms of how we feel when we have too many responsibilities or when we’re faced with an emotional challenge. But stress is much more than emotional tension, and it affects animals as well as people. Stress affects every aspect of the health of dogs and cats. It underlies every health problem that can befall a pet — from the allergies, cancer, and auto-immune conditions so rampant in dogs and cats today to the viral and bacterial diseases they can catch. The New Holistic Way will help you identify the eight kinds of stress that may affect your pet’s health. It will show you how stress relates not only to your dog or cat’s illness but also to her wellness. It will explain the importance of unwellness, which is the subtle state of being not-quite-well, that lies between optimal health and illness. The New Holistic Way will show you how to identify unwellness in your pet and advise you on how you can help her before her unwellness leads her down the road to becoming seriously ill. And if she does become ill, it will give you the tools you need to navigate through both the mainstream and natural options available in veterinary care today so that she can have the best possible outcome.

New concepts that support dogs and cats’ wellness
Dr. McCutcheon has found through years of experience that once a dog or cat has become unwell or ill, the most effective way to support her return to wellness is by employing a combination of stress-reducing lifestyle adjustments, a more suitable diet, and by favouring remedies that work with, rather than against, the body’s natural processes so that it may heal. Deeply rooted in his practice, he continues to develop his comprehensive and integrated approach to his patients’ health care. In the New Concepts section of the site, Dr. McCutcheon discusses the therapies, lifestyles, and diet he recommends for his patients.
